This is my Joss money to my sweet mother-in-law who recently passed. When I was little, I watched my aunties fold gold and silver paper into Yuan Bao for my grandmother’s afterlife. I didn’t understand it then, but now I do—they were sending love and comfort beyond this world. Anne Ratterree Wright—our beloved “Granne”—was born in 1931 during the Great Depression. A latch-key kid from an early age, she began collecting postcards, treasures sent by friends, family, and especially her father while he was stationed at Fort Bragg during World War II. After she passed, I had the chance to hold this collection in my hands and learn more about the remarkable woman I barely got to know. Two things defined Granne: her unwavering faith and her love for Pepsi. She always kept mini Pepsis chilled, half a burger saved for later, and postcards tucked away like tiny memories. So instead of burning Joss paper, I made her a ceramic postcard inscribed with one of her favorite Bible passages and fired it in the kiln—my way of sending her love, peace, and a little joy on her journey beyond this world. We miss you, Granne. You are always with us.
